Many people are familiar with the idea of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) or farm shares. The idea is that small farmers sell a weekly share of things that they grow or produce, things like veggies, fruit, eggs, flowers, meat, etc. to CSA members who commit in advance and for a set amount of time. This way the farmer has enough money at the start of the season to buy the things she needs to get the farm going. She might buy seeds, compost, equipment, or other things with the money that CSA members pay upfront. In return the CSA members get a share of the farm’s bounty. Members get a weekly share of super-fresh produce. Members also get a first hand opportunity to understand the work and risks involved in farming. If it’s a boon year for lettuce, everyone gets lots of lettuce. If the deer eat all the carrots while they’re young, no carrots. The idea is that we are all in it together.
PCA is delighted to be hosting Blue Skys Farm‘s CSA pick-up this season. Blue Skys is a local organic farm in western Cranston. You can read more about the farm and their Wellness Box CSA on their website.
