WANT TO HELP INCREASE ACCESS to alternative pain treatment?

The ear acupuncture provision in this legislation is a small tool that we know can have a big impact and so we want to increase access for Rhode Islanders to the benefits of the 5 needle ear acupuncture protocol or 5NP.
This bill would make it possible for those working as clinical social workers, mental health counselors, certified peer recovery specialists, and nurses to use 5NP in their work either individually or in groups. (Licensed Chemical Dependency Professionals and of course acupuncturists can already perform 5NP.)

PCA has been championing this legislation for the past 3 years, and it is moving forward quickly this year. 🙂

Hearings are scheduled this week (2/9 and 2/11) for both the house and senate versions of this bill. Our bill sponsors, in the House-David Bennett, and in the Senate-Josh Miller, have also been involved in legislation for  broader policy changes related to non-opioid pain treatment options, overdose prevention, healthcare access, decriminalization of drugs and more.
Changes that support, rather than punish individuals and their families, are what we need.

Could you send two short emails, one to each committee, to let the legislators know that there are a lot of us who want this legislation to finally become law ? Details below.
  • Bill numbers (House 5154) (Senate 47)
  • Your position —e.g “Strongly support.”
If you have a personal story or anecdote to include in your correspondence it’s also great to personalize the testimony. Or if you’re affiliated with an organization or effort to pass similar legislation elsewhere let that’s great info to include.
**If you’d like to deliver verbal testimony via video please email Cris via this website asap to insure that we are signed up to do that. Apparently virtual testimony is much more efficient with no endless waiting around the halls of the state house!

POCA is committed to making acupuncture as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. The 5 Needle Protocol (also commonly called 5NP, acudetox, or the NADA protocol) is a simple, safe, and effective ear acupuncture treatment that was created for non-acupuncturists to use in treating addiction, trauma, and behavioral health. Building off the legacy of those who developed and championed this treatment for decades, including the Young Lords, the Black Panther Party, Lincoln Detox, and the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, we have created a training program to enable as many people as possible to become Auricular Acu-Technicians (AATs) and use this treatment in their work and communities.

Looking Forward: NADA’s Role in Genuine Social Change

Feb 17, 2021

Join us for our February Membership Café

NADA’s roots stem from a revolutionary history. Join us as we look back at our history for context to ground us in our present day work. Together, we will look at NADA’s origins to propel us into a conversation on: What is NADA’s role in genuine social change? Why is the NADA protocol ‘revolutionary’? And what is the role of youth in the NADA movement?

This event will be livestreamed on NADA’s Facebook. Can’t make the event live? It will be recorded and available on Facebook, as well as the public resource section on the NADA website.

Instead of funding prisons, let's fund real change for people.

Check out the amazing and ongoing work of local organizations like RICARESPROTECT FAMILIES FIRST and SUBSTANCE USE POLICY EDUCATION AND RECOVERY Political Action Committee (SUPER PAC) providing support, education, resources, and advocacy to help destigmatize, decriminalize, defelon-ize substance use issues and to help end the war on drugs and all the negative impacts it has on individuals, their families and communities.

Protecting children and families means ending the war on drugs.

Drug policies should be designed to keep families intact, safe, and healthy. For decades we’ve funded a war on drugs that has done just the opposite. Protect Families First works to raise awareness about how the ideologies and policies driving the war on drugs are ruining the lives of young people and destroying communities. We advocate for more just, sensible, and humane drug policies that are informed by science, promote public health, and protect families first.

All of our Programs are designed to increase Recovery Capital. We view Recovery Capital as all things internal and external that are necessary to sustain an individuals recovery, guiding them into a life of wellness.

We work with people that are new to recovery to identify issues impacting their recovery. We scour the news to keep up with trends and data that inform us about historical and potential future barriers

Keep up to date with SUPER PAC RI’s Facebook page and learn more about proposed legislation and policy changes around the US and abroad, and how you can be a part of making these changes happen.
